This is a proof-of-concept application built in Java for Blackberry devices. It allows approval managers to review and take action on employee purchase requests, which are presented in a list format with a progressively disclosed detail screen.
We wanted to see how far we could go with custom UI components on the Blackberry platform. I would say we were successful in creating a unique, pleasing design.

We decided to follow a simple list-detail, progressive disclosure pattern for this application. Since the focus would be on the visual design, we wanted to experiment with a simple design pattern. We started with simple sketches on paper, then advanced to digital mock-ups and visual artifacts.
Our goal was to create subtle visual effects such as drop shadows, rounded edges, and gradients, following the popular trend. It was interesting to see how the platform responded to each of these styles. Rounded corners did not render properly while gradients of certain colors could not match the smooth look of a Photoshop produced design. I really enjoyed the challenge of coding the user interface to match the mock-ups as closely as possible.
