The RIM SRM app was created for the Blackberry hand-held and Playbook. This project was a mobile opportunity for an existing SAP supply resource management (SRM) system used at RIM. The goal was to allow approval managers to work on the go; purchase requests could be viewed and approved (or rejected) on the device anywhere, anytime.
Role: Developer and Designer
Team Size: 10+ people
Project Duration: 1 year
This was my first customer facing mobile project at SAP. Due to the size of the project, I was only involved in a portion of the UI development for the hand-held device. My task was to implement screens, such as the main request list and detail view, as closely to the visual design as possible. Creating rounded corners and gradients were the most difficult!
Next, I was responsible for designing and implementing the Playbook version of the app. This was my first time developing an Adobe Flex application. I had no previous experience, but I was up for the challenge. After discussing ideas with the team, we came up with a few mock-ups based on what was possible in Flex.
While our visual designer created the color design, I started to implement the proposed layout. I managed to complete the implementation in a couple weeks, complete with custom transitions and dynamic accordion movements. The most challenging part was looking for help related to the Playbook API- We were doing this before the device had been released so information was sparse. In addition, the simulator wasn't exact to the real device resolution and sizing. We had to make a lot of adjustments once we had a real device to work with.
Eventually, we completed the final design to our satisfaction. It was a great learning experience!
